The dollar option is the most
common method of optioning screenplays utilized by small to medium
sized independent film companies. (Nightshade included).
While the typical "Hollywood" screenplay option process may pay a
larger cash option or outright purchase, it is extremely rare that a
smaller, privately held company will take that risk on their investors. Contrary to popular
belief, the typical "Hollywood" option is $500 - $10,000 with the later
being primarily for contracted and well known scribes.
The "unknown" will virtually NEVER see an option that high.
An
option is held against a script for $1. This essentially ties up the
rights to the script so that it can't be sold behind the optioning
company's back while they prepare the project for financing and
production. Usually, it's designed to allow unknown writers to have
access to producers who might otherwise never see their work.
